Use It or Lose It? How Restorative Therapy Can Help You Stay Mobile

St Francis Woods Supportive Living Facility Residents 1 | St. Francis Woods

After a lifetime of working and caring for others, your loved ones deserve the peace of mind and comfort of a well-earned and happy retirement. Supportive living offers safety, social interaction, and a full and productive lifestyle for seniors that are mostly independent but might need some help with their day-to-day activities.

St. Francis Woods is perfect for adults aged 65 and older who value their independence but may need some assistance with medication reminders, meal preparation, bathing, dressing, and other household chores such as laundry and cleaning. As a supportive living community, we accept Medicaid to ensure that costs are never a barrier to getting the best possible care for you or your loved ones.

Starting in January, St. Francis Woods took yet another step in showing their commitment to being the best supportive care community in the area by hiring a restorative therapist. Restorative therapy ensures that the residents keep up their strength and maintain their independent movement. Since the start of COVID, many of us have halted most of the activities that keep us active and moving. For our seniors, this might mean staying in their home for most of the day. Over time, a sedentary lifestyle weakens the muscles and has debilitating effects on mobility. This includes not only a loss of endurance, but a loss of confidence in their ability to move independently from one place to another.

Our restorative therapy sessions, which happen twice a week, not only work to build those muscles back up, but also have the added benefit of restoring confidence and being a great opportunity to socialize with other residents. In some cases, our seniors have gone from being wheelchair-bound to full mobility in just a few months. During sessions, we also use the opportunity to educate the residents on how to avoid potential fall risks, ensure their walkers and canes are properly sized, and give them the latest balance training exercises.

At St. Francis Woods, we strongly believe in the old adage, “use it or lose it”. We are fully committed to providing the best possible opportunities for our residents to keep “using it” for years to come.
